Biologic Pain Management in Grand Rapids, MI

Leading-Edge Regenerative Medicine for Pain Relief

At Grand Rapids Pain, we offer regenerative medicine treatments for a wide range of conditions. Our experienced interventional pain specialists have successfully treated patients with conditions such as:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Tendon injuries (such as tennis elbow, Achilles tendonitis)
  • Ligament injuries (such as sprained ankles, ACL tears)
  • Joint pain (such as knee, hip, shoulder pain)
  • Muscle strains and tears
  • Chronic back and neck pain

The primary regenerative medicine treatment we specialize in is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections. PRP therapy harnesses the healing power of your own blood to promote tissue regeneration and accelerate the healing process.

During a PRP injection, a small sample of your blood is collected. The blood is then processed to concentrate platelets, growth factors, and other healing components. This concentrated plasma is then carefully injected into the affected area, stimulating your body's natural healing response.

Some of the many benefits of PRP injections include:

  • Non-surgical and minimally invasive procedure
  • Utilizes your body's own healing abilities
  • Reduces pain and inflammation
  • Promotes tissue repair and regeneration
  • Accelerates the healing process

PRP injections have shown promising results in promoting tissue repair and relieving pain for various conditions. Our highly experienced specialists will evaluate your specific condition and customize a treatment plan that suits your needs.

The experts at Grand Rapids Pain also utilize stem cell therapy. This treatment uses your own body's stem cells (autologous means from your own body, NOT from any other source) to promote tissue repair and healing at the cellular level for a large variety of conditions that contribute to your chronic pain. Stem cell therapy is used worldwide by well-trained and experienced specialists to treat a variety of diseases. The team at Grand Rapids Pain has decades of experience in safely performing this therapy for chronic pain.

This highly valued technology utilizes your own body's stem cells (cells that are known as ‘adult mesenchymal cells’) to help repair damaged tissues in the body that are causing you pain. Here’s how it works:

  • When your own body's stem cells are collected via a simple needle procedure, that can be done under just local anesthesia and if indicated, intravenous sedation can be used.
  • Your stem cells are collected from either a small needle extracting a proper amount of your body's stem cells. This is done with a needle to extract either several ounces of superficial adipose (fat) tissue just under your skin around your lower abdomen/flank area.
  • Then our team at Grand Rapids Pain extracts your own body’s stem cells from the adipose sample obtained with a very minor procedure taking less than 30 minutes and then adds your own stem cells to your own platelet-rich plasma (see PRP above).
  • We then deliver a highly concentrated mix of your own body's stem cells plus PRP into the affected area.
  • The concentrated stem cells and PRP not only stimulate your body's ability to repair those areas but the concentrated stem cells are thought to produce stimulation of healthy cells in the affected area (joints, spine, discs, nerves).

Frequently Asked Questions

Are PRP and stem cell injections painful?

PRP injections can cause some discomfort, as with any injection, but a numbing agent will always be used. It is best to consult with a healthcare professional to discuss any concerns or questions regarding PRP injections and pain management. If medically indicated, intravenous conscious sedation can be considered, which will reduce anxiety and pain of the injection portion of the procedure IF local anesthesia alone is not sufficient to produce a safe and comfortable experience for you. Please discuss this with your doctor and the team at Grand Rapids Pain.

How long does it take to see the results of platelet-rich plasma or stem cell therapy for pain relief?

The time it takes to see the results of platelet-rich plasma for pain relief can vary. Some individuals may experience improvement within a few weeks, while others may require multiple treatments or several months to notice significant changes. Stem cell therapy typically takes between 6-12 weeks for maximal benefit to be realized, but the PRP portion of the stem cell injectate can provide relief typically in a few weeks. Remember, orthobiologic treatments such as PRP and stem cell therapy utilize your own body's repair systems to promote healing and restoration, so immediate relief will not occur. Most patients who respond start to note benefits within the first couple of weeks, and for some, it takes as long as 12 weeks for improvement. Sometimes the process needs to be repeated more than once for the best results. This is why it is important to consult with a healthcare professional to understand the specific timeline for your situation.
